Broadening horizons, raising aspirations, increasing attainment

We believe that international activity plays a vital role in preparing our young people to thrive in a multicultural and interconnected world. International engagement is not just for the affluent school communities. All learners should be able to benefit from improved learning and teaching, and global links that can broaden their horizons, raise their aspirations and help them to appreciate and understand diverse cultures. Being exposed to the world, and engaging in collaborative learning with international peers helps young people to become more tolerant and understanding of other cultures and to be self confident global citizens.

Working with partners overseas provides a real and motivating context for learning about global issues such as climate change, human rights, and social justice. All areas that young people tell us are important to them.

International activity can also have a transformative impact on teaching and learning, and lead to whole school improvement. The study found that there is a modest link between international school activity and increased attainment, but that schools who are in disadvantaged areas are less likely to be exposed to these opportunities. It also found that teachers placed a high value on the international professional development they participated in. You can read more here.
